Marion02

Naracoorte - March 2009

The Marion City Band made a trip to Naracoorte on the Adelaide Cup long weekend in March as part of the band’s 40th Birthday celebrations. Naracoorte is the sister city of Marion so this was a natural choice.

It's not every day that a full blown brass band sets up in the garden of a country hospital and gives an impromptu concert, but that's what happened on the 7th of March when the Marion City Band rolled into Keith. On their way to performing at the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Fund-raising Concert in Naracoorte the band needed a venue to have a final "Out of Uniform" rehearsal to clarify some finer points for some visiting players.

In front of a large audience of hospital patients, residents, staff and friends, the band worked their way through a dozen numbers from their varied repertoire. One resident was celebrating her 90th birthday and the band helped ensure it was a day to remember by getting her up to conduct the band.

At Naracoorte the band checked in to their motel and immediately got into uniform and headed to the “Sound Shell” in the middle of town and performed a concert for a small but enthusiastic audience. Then they hit the pub for dinner.

On Sunday morning the band was the first act in a concert in support of the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. This 7 hour free concert included many local acts and an Australian Idol contestant. This event raised over $7300 which included donations that the band had collected in Keith. After the concert, the band had a quick lunch and headed to the Naracoorte caves where they again played a concert near the main entrance for the many long weekend visitors.

After the show, the band got changed and tried a little spelunking themselves in a private tour of the World Heritage listed Victoria Fossil Cave. After the cave tour it was back on the bus for the trip home.  It is little wonder that after 4 concerts and a cave tour in 26 hours most of the band were blowing zeds rather than horns in the bus on the way home.

Kadina - Sunday June 28th 2009

The Anglican Church in Kadina holds a monthly concert. Marion City Band were invited to Kadina to perform a concert in the local theatre for members of the community. A shared lunch was very kindly supplied to the band members through the generosity of the Anglican Church members (of which BJs parents are members).

It was a lovely venue and once the small technical issue of flashing disco spotlights had been resolved, the band played a selection of Cabaret pieces to the delight of the audience.

After the concert Band members were invited “backstage” for afternoon Tea and Scones. It was a very friendly community event - a big thank you to the organizers. Well done to the band members (and families) who made their way from Adelaide to Kadina and return on the day, to support this performance.

Greg and Anne’s Wedding - Saturday July 4th 2009

Greg and Anne, two Marion Band Members, celebrated their Wedding, with members of MCB (and Warri) playing for them “Crazy little thing called love” by Queen.

After a lovely ceremony, the band played a selection of music pieces while family and friends congratulated the happy couple. The pieces played included Theme from Titanic (my heart will go on), You raise me up, Mamma Mia, Kids at the Movies suite, Putting on the Ritz, Funky Town and Rock the Joyful Canon. The band completed their contribution by a repeat play of “Crazy little thing called love” as the photographer took photos of Greg and Anne in front of the band.

CONGRATULATIONS GREG AND ANNE

Playing a catchy selection of favorite songs, it was great to see all the Warri players enjoying themselves, with some of them playing at a gig for the first time.

Lots of photos were taken - please check them out below.

Mount Gambier - November 2009

Marion City Band, led by Drum Major Elizabeth McDonald and Warriparinga Brass, led by Veronica Boulton joined in the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade.

Following a mass march gathering of all bands, Warriparinga children and adults took positions on the hay bale truck float and progressed along the street playing various well known christmas carols.  Marion City Band formed up and marched to “Mistle’toe tappin” (an arrangement put together by V Boulton for the MCB to enjoy for the 2009 christmas pageants).

Here are some photos capturing the moments leading up to and during the parade.
