Marion Band goes to Gaol ...

Brass bands often find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings ...

Sunday, 9th March witnessed the Band ‘Celebrating’ the 20th Anniversary of the closure of The Old Adelaide Gaol. Sadly, crime has not entirely ceased in South Australia, however more suitable ‘holding’ facilities have replaced this robust 19th Century Establishment.

MCB Jail 3-08 014 Small Web view

Inkeeping with the period, and in support of the prevailing Colonial Justice System of the Free Settled State of South Australia, a representative contingent of  Colonial Military based at Port Glanville, re-enacted military control by firing a vintage ‘2 Pounder Cannon’ at 1 pm.  This was followed by Carbine Drill and the firing of Muskets ‘to Order’!

Cabaret at Club Marion - March 2008!

Marion City Band, under the baton of MD Veronica Boulton, temporarily cast off the ‘Brass Band’ mantle restyling the ensemble into a  Cabaret Band ... all this happened on Friday evening, 14th March at the ‘Club Marion’.

The programme included a variety of popular ballads, swing and novelty items and yes, a couple of traditional Brass Band numbers!

Here are Alex and Cathy playing the cornet duet ‘Ida & Dot’ ... well appreciated by the audience and a nice variation on the ‘cabaret’ theme

And for the Jazz lovers ... here is James leading the Band in a big swing version of ‘I’m beginning to see the Light’. James also provided a Jazzy Trombone interchange with ‘BJ’s’ vocal offering of the groovy number ‘Sway’

‘Rajah Reserve Picnic’ - March 2008!

Marion Bands enjoyed a ‘Picnic Day Out’ with the Rajah Street community (Oaklands Park) on Sunday, 30th March.

The community’s organisers are a very active group working hard to stimulate interest in a wide range of community activities ... this time the gathering of residents enjoyed a musical afternoon with fun & games for local youngsters.

‘SABA Solo & Ensemble Competition’     - June 2008

For Full ‘Results’ goto ...

www.sabandassociation.org

Adelaide’s ‘brass’ fraternity enjoyed a  reformatted and exciting ‘Solo & Ensemble’ feast over the week- end of 14/15th June. The added dimension of Ensemble playing this year ‘... was a sheer delight ...’ according to one Adjudicator ... and so say all of us!

The inclusion of Ensembles encouraged many more players, particularly younger ones, to become involved in the competition. The lesser experienced were able to join small groups with tomorrow’s ‘stars’ to produce successful outcomes. Whilst the event was historically a ‘brass’ occasion it was pleasing to witness the appearance of ‘reed’ instruments .. adding further to the entertainment whilst broadening the musical soundscape

The organisation and catering were a credit to the event .. thank you to everyone involved

Warriparinga Brass players are shown here participating in the Junior Competition with their usual enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoying the day ....

Many veterans, family members, hospital staff, volunteers and friends filled the Chapel on the warm, sunny morning.

The ‘Requiem’ was read by Mr Robert Fothergill OAM .... followed by the reading of the ‘ODE’ by Mr Bill Schmitt.

The Address was delivered by Professor Trevor Wilson AM, Visiting Fellow, University of Adelaide School of History.   Professor Wilson gave a thought provoking view of the circumstances prevailing at the time of both ‘World War’ conflicts.
