Archive’s 2007

The recording of ‘Archive’s 2007’ suffered a PC problem mid-year. Much has been restored, however, several events are yet to be retrieved ... bear with us. The gap between June and August is in hand and will be issued soon.

Marion stages a Goolwa Cabaret ...

Marion City Band took to the country on Saturday, 4th August with a ‘Cabaret’ in Goolwa. The audience rolled in from miles around the South Coast town to enjoy the evening’s entertainment. Which was sufficiently exciting and varied to satisfy  a huge range of musical tastes.

The band opened the programme with the rousing piece ‘Gonna Fly Now’ followed by several songs by one of Marion’s popular vocalists, Dean.

Set 1 of the programme was shared with Goolwa Town Band (pictured below) which played a 30 minute bracket of swing and show tunes

During the three ‘interlude’ sets the Marion Jazz  Combo  provided an alternative musical style for listening and dancing

In Set 2 first number was the lovely Irish ballad ‘Erin Shore’.  This was followed by another of the bands vocalists ‘Mr. Versatility’, David. He featured several old favourites including ‘Old Man River’, ‘Moon River’ and ‘Edelweiss’.

Two novelty items featuring Claire (‘Eternal Triangle’) and Graham (‘Musical Fairy Tale) completed the segment

And now for someting quite different ... Sarah and (daughter) Chelsea delighted the audience with an exquisite display of ‘belly-dancing’!  Credit to the girls for courageously bringing a fragment of another culture to the sleepy South Coast town. Sorry, photo’s were censored by the ‘Board’ (elderly ladies, in cardigans and sensible shoes) ... just joking!

Marion Band Set 3 opened with the Band’s female entertainer Natalie, who treated the audience to a series of traditional cabaret items. These included ‘All that Jazz’ and ‘Basin Street Blues’.  She followed this with a dance session. Initially with ‘Singing in the Rain’, followed by two Germanic Polka.  These prompted David (again) to reach for this accordion to add a Bavarian touch.

The final segment for the evening included serious late-night brass ‘swing’ numbers ... towit, Brass Band Boogie and Birdland. Enfin ... in an attempt to calm down the 4-wheel driver’s for their journey home Veronica arranged a special version of the hymn ‘Crimond’ ... it was stunning!

Graham’s Playground Dedicated

On Sunday 12 August the City of Marion’s Mayor Felicity-Anne Lewis, opened a new Playground in the Cosgrove Hall Precinct.  The facility was named after former Councilor Graham Watts in recognition of 21 dedicated years of service to the  Marion community.

The event was held on the site in front of a supportive crowd, which included Council Members, relatives and friends. The proceedings included speeches of appreciation by the Mayor and other Dignitaries focussing on Graham’s service, including his significant work in the Clovelly Park area.

One very important contribution during his tenure was his 16 year dedication to Marion City Band, as liaison with Council.  On his retirement form Council Graham was appointed President of the Band.

Jack’s ‘not so good news’

We regret to report that jack and his wife were injured in a motor vehicle accident on 10th October.

Whilst Jack suffered fractured bones to ankle, ribs and pelvis, Norma was rather more fortunate and was discharged from Hospital after a few days

Wear e now pleased to advise that after a surgical session or two, Jack is now recovering quietly in the Repat’ hospital.  Recent visitors report the ‘old fella’ is looking well and very perky!

South Australian Band Championships - 2007

The South Australian Brass community’s major event this year heralded the 150th Anniversary Celebrations of Tanunda Town Band. A major milestone for the State’s music world. Tandunda’s celebrations coincided on this occasion, with the South Australian Band Championships on the 6th October. Hence a rather special version of the ‘States’ was staged.

The traditional ‘street’ march competition was held with local and interstate bands in highly competitive mode. It was wonderful to hear the offerings of the quality competing participants from as far afield as Queeensland and Victoria

ON 6pm on the evening of 6th October 1857 the original Tanunda Town Band delighted early settlers with their first performance, outside the Tanunda Hotel. To  commemorate that performance the current ensemble ‘re-enacted’ the event ... at the same time, on the same day on the same spot, one hundred and fifty years later ... wonderful!

Marion City Band & Warriparinga Brass were very pleased to be part of the celebrations and wish Tanunda Town Band many more years of successful ‘banding’. Many of Warriparinga’s younger players are looking forward to attending the 200th Anniversary!  No doubt they will carry many happy memories with them.
