Old Adelaide Gaol - Open Day - March 2008!
Marion Band goes to Gaol ...
Brass bands often find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings ...
Sunday, 9th March witnessed the Band ‘Celebrating’ the 20th Anniversary of the closure of The Old Adelaide Gaol. Sadly, crime has not entirely ceased in South Australia, however more suitable ‘holding’ facilities have replaced this robust 19th Century Establishment.
Inkeeping with the period, and in support of the prevailing Colonial Justice System of the Free Settled State of South Australia, a representative contingent of Colonial Military based at Port Glanville, re-enacted military control by firing a vintage ‘2 Pounder Cannon’ at 1 pm. This was followed by Carbine Drill and the firing of Muskets ‘to Order’!
Marion City Band (below) entertaining visitors to the Gaol during the afternoon’s proceedings ...
Flugal,Trevor (above) ... happy to be near the door!
During their well earned break the Band found themselves ‘incarcerated’ in Cell No. 36B ... given the 40C temps it was a relief to many!
and Cathy ... looking ... Angelic ... aaah!
Yup! ... the happiest bunch of Prisoners you’ve seen in a while!
Cabaret at Club Marion - March 2008!
Marion City Band, under the baton of MD Veronica Boulton, temporarily cast off the ‘Brass Band’ mantle restyling the ensemble into a Cabaret Band ... all this happened on Friday evening, 14th March at the ‘Club Marion’.
The programme included a variety of popular ballads, swing and novelty items and yes, a couple of traditional Brass Band numbers!
Ballads and up-beat numbers featured both vocal and instrumental soloists
Linda & Natalie (left) rendering their version of ‘All That Jazz’.
Whilst below, Marion’s newest singing sensation ‘BJ’, is delivering the swingin’ tune ‘Bad Leroy Brown’ to the delight of the packed house
And below .... David, our regular Ballad singer putting a lot of feeling into ‘Love Changes Everything’
And now for the instrumentalists....
Here are Alex and Cathy playing the cornet duet ‘Ida & Dot’ ... well appreciated by the audience and a nice variation on the ‘cabaret’ theme
And for the Jazz lovers ... here is James leading the Band in a big swing version of ‘I’m beginning to see the Light’. James also provided a Jazzy Trombone interchange with ‘BJ’s’ vocal offering of the groovy number ‘Sway’
And two lovely ballads from: Trevor, Flugal, above (By the Time I get to Phoenix) and Imogen, Soprano, right playing (Summertime).
And finally, here is ‘BJ’ singing and dancing ‘Cheek to Cheek’ with Bernice, Marion’s ‘Band Person of the Year 2007’.
‘Rajah Reserve Picnic’ - March 2008!
Marion Bands enjoyed a ‘Picnic Day Out’ with the Rajah Street community (Oaklands Park) on Sunday, 30th March.
The community’s organisers are a very active group working hard to stimulate interest in a wide range of community activities ... this time the gathering of residents enjoyed a musical afternoon with fun & games for local youngsters.
The youngsters of Warriparinga Brass opened the entertainment amongst the trees, with items both in the popular and classical styles
Above is the Cornet section .... whilst on the right... Susan, the Band’s (very) young drummer

‘Air Force Memorials Service’ - April 2008
Former Royal Australian Air Force members assembled on Sunday morning 20th April for the annual Memorial Service for ANZAC Day.
As in previous years the service took place on the lawns adjacent to the Vickers Vimy Memorial at Adelaide Airport.
The Host for the Ceremony was Wing Commander B Wright representing the No.6 Wing of Australian Air Force Cadets custodians of the Adelaide Air Force Memorials. RAAF Chaplin Y Just-Constant welcomed the gathering and conducted the formal service.
The wreath-laying ceremony was led by Wing Commander R Smallwood, followed by wreath bearers representing various branches of the service
During service Marion City Band played Hymn ‘Lead Kindly Light’ followed by the two Anthems. At the close of the Ceremony the Band played the march ‘Sure & Steadfast’
Musician Alexandra Bowman sounded the ‘Last Post & Reveille’
‘ANZAC Day’ - April 2008
Dawn Services ... following tradition Marion City Band formed two groups to provide musical support for the separate services at Marion and Edwardstown memorials. Both services included prayers for the fallen and wreath laying ceremonies.
Pictured below is the setting for the dawn ceremony at the Norfolk Road Memorial ... led by the RSL President and RSL Chaplin Monsignor R Rice. During the services Marion City Band members played Hymns and Anthems. And for the first time a member of the Kuarna People played a piece on the Didgeridoo.
The services were followed by the traditional breakfast in the RSL Hall, Norfolk Rd., Marion.
The Norfolk Road Memorial is pictured (right) shortly after wreath-laying at day-break
City March... following breakfast Marion City Band travelled to the City to take part in the annual ANZAC Day March. Again this year the Band marched in two sections of the parade supporting various Veteran’s organisations. It is pleasing to record that no less than 32 band members turned out for this event.
The morning was cool and mostly sunny for the large crowd lining the route .
And below we see exhausted players and family members enjoying a quiet drink before settling down for a very welcome meal ......
